May 7 Home sweet Home!?

Psalms 127:1-2
Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.

Is your home sweet? Are you at peace in your home? Do you get along with your family? Are things going the right way? Are you alone? It is a real blessing for a person to have a peaceful home life. But it is not always so. In many cases, there is strife in our homes. It is difficult to face the world when you have no sanctuary in your home!

Psalm 127 talks about the Lord building the house. What do you suppose that means? Is He actually the builder or the architect? As the architect, the Lord would be involved in the planning of how the house is to be built. By asking God into the planning stages, you are asking for His guidance in how to construct a relationship. The Creator of the universe also created us and knows how we are made. He would be the perfect One to consult when building a marriage. Most people spend more time planning the wedding than the marriage. If you invite the Lord in, He will bless your home and marriage “For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.” Isn’t it a good idea to leave room for God’s Holy Spirit in your home and marriage? Many of us follow our ego (easing God out). We think we know what is best. History has proven otherwise.

I know that God entering in has improved things in our home. I always believed in God but I did not understand that was supposed to mean He was in every part of my life. I thought He was there in case I needed Him but I had most things covered on my own! After all, He gave me these gifts and talents, didn’t He? I should use them, right? It took a long time to understand that God wants to speak with us about everything; even the small stuff. If, by waiting for His guidance, I just hold back one wise guy comment, our lives will be better.

What if you are alone due to death or divorce? What if you have not yet found the one with whom you want to spend your life? Is home a sweet place for you? We were not designed to be alone so it probably is not to your liking. One thing to remember is you are never alone. God, by His Holy Spirit walks with you and within you! Psalm 121:4 says “indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.“ He is always there to speak with you and comfort you. If you will let Him, He will lead you to the person He has ordained for you. In fact, that should be what we all do. We should let God find us our mate.

So is your home sweet? If so, do you appreciate all that you have and thank and bless those there? If not, what part do you play in the discord? If you were more kind and patient, would it help? Are you trying to change the other person? All you can do is ask God to change you. Ask Him! Psalm 139:24 (NKJV) 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting. God will lead you if you ask but you must listen carefully for His voice.

Hello Lord! Thank you for this and every day You grant us. Guide us in the ways we should go and teach us what relationships are supposed to be. Help us to think beyond the glitter of the wedding to the work and compromise of the marriage. Teach us to leave room for Your Presence in our homes and relationships. Give us the blessings You have stored up for us. In your name we pray! Amen!
