January 16 What is Your Motive?

Hebrews 10 (NIV) Selected Verses Christ’s Sacrifice Once for All
10 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. ……..It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;
with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.
Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, my God.’”
16 “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”

Why do you do the things you do? One of my favorite words is motive. In today’s context, it sometimes has a bad connotation. It is related often to a crime. But there are good motives. It relates to one of my Life Verses which is Matthew 12:34b, “…..For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” What does that mean? It means that what is in your heart will eventually come out of your mouth. Motive speaks to what is in your heart. It relates to the “why” of your life. You can’t be one kind of person in business and another kind of person at Church. You are who you are no matter how you try to hide things.

God made it clear the He looks at the heart which is the source of our motives to see the why. Many people are just going through the motions. They are trying to get by with the least possible to satisfy a requirement. Is that you? Do you do the least you can get away with or do you do things as if unto the Lord? Why do you do what you do? Is it out of the overflow of your heart that you want to bless others? At BNI (Business Networking International), you are taught the motto “Givers Gain”. I think this comes from Zig Ziglar’s statement that “you can everything you want out of life if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” If you go out intending to love and serve others, you will be blessed in the process of blessing them!

So, what’s your motive? What is in your heart? Are you loving your neighbor as yourself? What’s the “why” of it all? Will you ask God to fill your heart with His love so you can go out and bless others?

The lyrics from the song “Write Your Story” express how we might want to live. It is what I ask Jesus to do! I want Him to change me from the inside out.

FRANCESCA BATTISTELLI LYRICS “Write Your Story”

I’m an empty page I’m an open book
Write Your story on my heart
Come on and make Your mark

Author of my hope Maker of the stars
Let me be Your work of art
Won’t You write Your story on my heart

Will you ask God to write His story on your heart? Do you want to live the life He has designed for you? Then do everything as if it were a testament to its creator and yours!

Lord, please write Your story on our hearts. Mold us into the kind of people You want us to be. In Your name we pray!
