Genesis 2: 1-3 (NIV)
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Sometimes, I get to a point where I can do nothing. I am so overwhelmed that I cannot do anything. Have you ever felt that way? How do you get yourself out of that funk? If you stay in the situation, nothing will change. Is there a model for how to handle a situation where it seems more than you can handle? The Lord God gave you a model. You are to do what He did. The Sabbath was designed for your benefit. You need rest.
The Sabbath is the time God designed for your rest. On the seventh day, He rested. There is discussion about the length of each day in God’s timing. That doesn’t really matter if it was a 24 hour day. And since God did not make the sun and moon until the fourth day, there was no way to tell one day from another. With that in mind, do we have to wait seven days? I propose that we rest when we need to rest. If you are like me, (and you too were made in God’s image and likeness so you probably are) you need to back away for a little while and regroup. That is called rest. You can enter God’s rest at any time. It is another way of saying entering God’s presence. Jesus made a way for us to enter the Presence of God any time by His sacrifice. So when you are overwhelmed, take a break and visit with your Lord. Ask Him for guidance. Ask Him for peace. Invite Him into your day. You can have Sabbath rest at any time. God did! Shouldn’t you follow His lead?
Father God, You said we are to remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy. Thank You that You are our support. It is our privilege to be with You in Your rest. You blessed that day so please let it be a blessing to us as well. And Lord, help us to remember You at all times and not just once a week. Let us enter Your rest daily and enjoy a Sabbath hour or even a few minutes with You. We will be renewed and refreshed. In Jesus name we pray!
