November 12 Can I really make a difference?

Psalms 96:3 NKJV
“Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders among all peoples.”

Many of us go through life wondering if we can make a difference. Have you ever felt helpless? Do you think you shouldn’t bother because “what difference will it make?” I am here to tell you that every person makes a difference. Before the foundation of the world, God knew you would be here in this time and place and He has a plan for you. You are not here by chance.

This Psalm tells us to declare His glory to everyone. We are to share the good news about God to all people and all nations. Does that mean we are to get a soap box and stand out on street corners preaching? I’m not sure that would be the most effective method. When Jean and I were in New Orleans, there was a guy on the corner on a milk crate wearing an umbrella hat preaching to passers-by without a lot of success. Sometimes, the best way to share the good news is without words. Sometimes, your actions can speak louder than words. Are you kind and considerate to all those you meet?

I worked for a corporation about 15 years ago that made software we sold to Real Estate agents. We attended national and regional conventions and trade shows presenting our products. The meeting planner and I were both Christians and we lived our lives that way. At each show, there would be one night where the Exec VP would have us all gather for a dinner together. In Las Vegas, Vicki and I were the last two to arrive for this dinner because we had closed down the show booth together. It was a buffet so we got in the line for food. When we arrived at the table, I noticed that no one was eating. I thought that strange. And then, I was given the answer. The Exec VP asked me if I would say grace for the group before we ate. I was pleasantly surprised and offered thanks. From that day on, each time we gathered for the company dinner, they all waited for grace. I have pondered that moment for a long time. What made them ask?

Vicki and I usually said grace by ourselves at the end of the table. Apparently, others were watching. We never said anything about our faith to others but they noticed. Something about the life we were living attracted others to want to know more. Are you living that kind of life? Do others watch you to see what it is like to follow a Risen Lord? Can you preach the Gospel without words? Yes you can! In fact, that is what I am calling you to do. Go out and live your life in a manner that makes others want the peace and joy you have. Your actions can and will make a difference. I have had clients ask me to pray for them when they faced surgery. You have the good news planted inside you. They will notice and they will ask. Be friendly and show the fruit of the Spirit which God has planted within you. Be a blessing to all you meet.

Father, thank You for all the gifts You have given us in our lives. The gifts of friends and family are incredible. Help us to shine Your light into the lives of everyone we meet. Lead us to the people who You know need that light. You are our strength and shield. Help us to declare Your Glory to all nations and all peoples. In Your name we pray! Amen!
